Zabbar is a city with a great historical and architectural heritage. Zabbar is located in the South Eastern part of Malta. It is Malta’s fourth largest town, with a population of around 17,100. Żabbar was given the title of Città Hompesch by the Grandmaster Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim, and on this occasion the locals built an impressive arch in the main road, when approaching from Paola. The name Zabbar derives from the Maltese word ‘tiżbor’, the process of pruning trees. It seems that a number of people who specialised in pruning used to live in this village during the Middle Ages.
